Biography
Simi is a Nigerian singer, and songwriter known for her soulful voice, and songwriting skills. She came to limelight for her single “Joromi”. She has established herself as one of Nigeria’s most respected female vocalists, blending Afropop, R&B, and soul into a unique sound.
Simi was born in Ojuelegba in Lagos, Nigeria, and was raised by her mother after her parents separated when she was very young. She is the last child in a family of four children.
She went to Stars International College in Ikorodu, Lagos State, for her secondary education, and later studied Mass Communication at Covenant University.
She was exposed to music at a very early stage where she would perform in church choirs. She began her professional music career in the late 2000s, initially focusing on gospel music. She released her debut gospel album, Ogaju, in 2008.The album which was produced by Samklef, comprises of hit songs like “Ara Ile” and “Iya Temi”. The project earned her modest recognition within Christian music environment before she transitioned into mainstream music.
She came through with the release of the EP “Restless” in January 2014 which earned her a record deal with X3M Music. She had her breakthrough in 2014 with the release of “Tiff,” which is a catchy tune about romantic misunderstandings.
She gained more exposure in 2017 with the release of her second studio album, Simisola. The album featured hit singles such as “Joromi,” “Smile for Me,” and “Owanbe.” It debuted at number one on iTunes Nigeria and won Album of the Year at The Headies in 2018.
She released Omo Charlie Champagne, Vol. 1, in 2019, which showcased her growth in the music industry.
Simi launched her record label Studio Brat. She has collaborated with prominent Nigerian artists and toured extensively. In 2020, she released the EP Restless II, in 2020, and followed up with her fourth studio album To Be Honest in 2022.
Simi has received several awards and nominations throughout her career which include The Headies, City People Entertainment awards, and Nigerian entertainment awards. She is praised for her lyrical depth, vocal clarity, and consistent artistic evolution.
Simi also worked as a sound engineer, a skill that contributes to her polished productions. She mixed and mastered Adekunle Gold’s debut studio album “Gold” released in July 2016.
Simi was in a relationship with Adekunle Gold for five years before they eventually got married in a private ceremony on January 9, 2019. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Adejare, on May 30, 2020.
