Biography
Tate McRae is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and dancer well known for her hit single “You Broke Me First”, and her 2025 album “So Close to What”. She became successfull for her combination of vocals and choreography into her pop music.
She was born in Calgary, Alberta, to Tanja Rosner, a dance instructor, and Todd McRae, a lawyer. Her mother’s dance studio played a major role in her upbringing. Her family moved to Oman temporarily due to her father’s work when she was only two years old. She began dancing recreationally at age six, and trained more after returning to Canada. She began competing in dance companies, taking ballet, and developing skills in multiple dance styles.
She became known with dance at a young age. she competed in shows and was the first Canadian finalist in the U.S. reality TV show “So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation”. Even though dance was her foundation, she started writing and recording music, where she came through in 2017 with the release of “One Day”. She released her debut extended play in 2020, titled “All the Things I Never Said”. The project included “You Broke Me First”, the song that made her to be recognized internationally.
She released another EP “Too Young to Be Sad” in 2021, which became one of the most streamed female EPs that year. She followed up with first studio album “I Used to Think I Could Fly” in 2022, which spawn the single “She’s All I Wanna Be”. She released her third studio album in 2024, titled “So Close to What”, with songs like “Sports Car”, and “Revolving Door”, becoming popular in 2025. These songs reflect her evolving sound, blending pop with dance elements and storytelling.
