Biography
Adekunle Gold is a Nigerian singer and songwriter known for his songs, “Sade” and “Orente”. He has built a reputation for blending highlife, Afropop, R&B, and Afro-fusion over the years and has evolved into one of Afropop’s star.
Adekunle Gold was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He hails from a royal family in Lagos State. He showed passion for music at a veey early age while also having interest in visual design. He attended Lagos State Polytechnic, where he studied Arts and Design.
He was a member of a gospel music group known as The Bridge before going solo.
However, he had his major breakthrough in 2015 with the release of “Sade”. Following the success of “Sade,” he signed with YBNL Nation, a prominent Nigerian record label owned by Olamide. He released more hit singles under the label which include; “Orente” and “Pick Up”.
He unveiled his debut studio album, Gold, in 2016. The album which featured a mix of highlife, Afropop, and contemporary African sounds, debuted at number one on the Nigerian iTunes chart. It also established him as one of Nigeria’s leading male vocalists while earning several award nominations.
AG Baby as fondly called, released his second album, About 30, in 2018, after leaving YBNL Nation record label.
His 2020 album, Afro Pop, Vol. 1, marked a shift towards a more global Afropop and Afro-fusion direction.
He released Catch Me If You Can, in 2022. It is an album which further showcased his ability to adapt to changing musical trends.
He has received several nominations and awards, which recognized his songwriting, vocal performance, and contribution to the Nigerian music industry. He won the Songwritwr of the Year at The Headies (2023), Best African Music Artist at IARA (2017), Album of the Year at City People Entertainment Awards (2017). His consistency and artistic reinvention have kept him relevant in a competitive industry.
Adekunle Gold was in a relationship with Simi for five years before they eventually got married in a private ceremony on January 9, 2019. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Adejare, on May 30, 2020.
