Brian Brobbey

Brian Brobbey is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a striker for Sunderland and the national team of Netherlands. He is traditional number 9 known for his strength, excellent box movemnets and link up play. He can also shield the ball away from defenders just like Victor Osimen and Harry Kane. He is recognized for his physique and presence like a bull on the field of play and has been compared to the football legends, Daniel ‘The Bull’ Amokachi and Diego Costa but with more muscle.

Brobbey began his career at the youth level with AFC before joining Ajax academy in 2010.

He made his debut for Ajax in a 5-2 win against Fortuna Sittard, where he came on as a substitute and also scored his first goal for the club, on October 31, 2020. He also made his European debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League against Atalanta on December 9, 2020.

He joined RB Leipzig on July 1, 202, and later returned to Ajax on a six-mo ths loan with an optional to buy on December 27, 2021.

However, Ajax confirmed the re-signing of Brian Brobbey on a five-year contract on July 22, 2022. He scored a goal on his first return match in a 3-2 away victory over Fortuna Sittard on August 6, 2022. He also scored back to back braces in a 7-1 victory against Excelsior, and a 4-1 victory over RKC Waalwijk, on October 16 and October 22, respectively. During his time With Ajax, he won the Eredivisie (2020-21, 2021-22), and KNVB Cup: 2020-21.

He also joined the English Sunderland for a reported fee of €20 million, on September 1, 2025. He scored his first goal for Sunderland in a 2-2 draw against Arsenal

Brobbey represented Netherlands at the youth stages from under-15 to under-21 levels. He won the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2018 and 2019, most especially, after helping his side secured the trophy with a goal, in a 4-2 win against Italy, during the 2019 final.

He was called up to the senior team by the coach Louis van Gaal, ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup but did not make the final list. He received his official call-up in October 2023 for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying matches against France and Greece. He eventually made his debut in a 1-0 win against Greece on October 16, 2023.

He was also part of the squad for the UEFA Euro 2024 but had a limited playing time due to the presence of Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst. He scored his first goal for the senior team in a 1-1 draw against Bosni and Herzegovina at the 2024-25 UEFa Nations League A Campaign, on. November 19, 2024.

Moreover, it wasn’t far fetched as Brian Brobbey showed his quality on the pitch after scoring a brace in a 5-1 won against Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He has received several individual awards such as; Eredivisie player of the month in December 2023, January 2024, and February 2025, and Ajax Player of the Year (Rinus Michels Awards).

Some of his weaknesses are that; he occasionally lacks composure in front of goal which lead to less conversion rate. He is not that good at aerial duels, low defensive contributions, and has a history of muscle and hamstrings setbacks.
