Biography
Calvin Bassey is a Nigerian professional footballer and a centre-back with physicality and pace. He is ball playing defender with good link up play and ball progression.
Bassey was born in Aosta, Italy, to Nigerian parents Kingsley Ikenna Ughelumba, and Ebere Bassey Etim. His father is from Anambra State and his mother from Oron Akwa Ibom state. He grew up in Newham, England, and his parents separated when he was only six years old. He was raised by his mother alongside his brothers namely; Elvis, Michael, and Mathew. Although, his father made an attempt to reunite with the family but Calvin had maintained distance from him.
He began his career at CM Futsal academy before joining the youth academy of Leicester City in 2015.
He joined Rangers in 2020 and made his professional debut on Auguat 9, 2020, in a Scottish Premiership fixture. He scored his first goal for the club in a 4-0 away victory over Falkirk in the Scottish league on November 29.
He signed for Ajax for a reported fee of £20 million in July 2022 and later joined the English club Fulham on a four-year contract for a reported fee of £21 million, on July 28, 2023. He made
Bassey is eligible to play for Italy and England but he decided to represent Nigeria at the international level. He made his debut for the Nigerian senior team in a goalless draw with Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification on March 25, 2022. He scored his first international goal in a 1-1 away draw against South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification on September 9, 2025.
